Nehemiah 9:6Sefaria

Recognizing the true greatness of God begins with understanding His absolute uniqueness and His ongoing relationship with the universe. His presence is revealed to all living things through three main avenues: the initial creation of the upper and lower worlds, His constant sustenance of these realms, and His absolute control over every force in nature [מלבי״ם].

God’s existence is entirely independent, stemming solely from His own essence. In contrast, the existence of every other being in the universe flows exclusively from Him [רלב״ג]. Because of this independent and supreme nature, He alone is elevated far beyond any human blessing or praise [מלבי״ם].

Looking at the structure of creation, different layers of the heavens emerge. The sky above can be understood as the visible firmament [אבן עזרא] or the primary celestial spheres that structure the cosmos [רלב״ג]. Beyond this lies a higher realm, often identified as the upper heavens resting above the visible sky [מצודת דוד], the uppermost celestial spheres [אבן עזרא], or the secondary spheres that assist the primary ones in their cosmic movement [רלב״ג]. All of these intricate heavenly systems were specifically designed to house the stars and constellations [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד].

In the lower realms, God formed the earth and everything upon it, bringing forth all plant and animal life. He also formed the seas and filled them with a vast array of aquatic creatures [ביאור שטיינזלץ], including fish, underwater vegetation, and coral reefs [רלב״ג].

However, God's involvement did not end with the initial act of creation. He actively provides life and nourishment to all living creatures [מצודת דוד]. There is a fundamental difference between something made by a human and something created by God. When a person builds an object, that object continues to exist on its own even after the builder walks away. Divine creation, by contrast, has no independent existence. God acts as the very soul of reality, and the continued survival of the world depends entirely on His constant, life-giving influence at every single moment [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].

Because of this constant dependence, the entire host of heaven remains completely subservient to Him. While it might sometimes appear that the world is governed by the stars or the independent laws of nature, all these forces yield to God. They move and operate only as His messengers, for He is the ultimate leader and ruler who supplies power to them all [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].
