Nehemiah 9:34Sefaria

A profound historical confession reveals a long chain of national failure, extending from the highest levels of leadership down to the ancestors of the nation. This admission goes beyond the present moment, looking back at past wrongs through a lens of deep soul-searching. The primary approach among commentators is that the current generation is acknowledging their shared guilt, confessing that they have acted wickedly alongside their kings and forefathers Another perspective suggests that the confession serves to declare that God is entirely just in His judgment against those past kings and leaders [מלבי״ם].

A tragic contrast emerges between different eras in history. In earlier times, the ancestors enjoyed political independence, royal leadership, and immense success, living in the abundance that God provided for them in a good land. Even though they faced no hardship or siege, they refused to serve God and would not abandon their evil ways [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. This reality stands in sharp opposition to the grim circumstances faced by the people returning to Zion. Ultimately, the nation failed every test placed before them. They rebelled against God during the test of wealth and prosperity in the past, and they continued to fail during the test of poverty and oppression in their present [מלבי״ם].

Their disregard for God's guidance is highlighted by the repeated warnings directed at them to keep the commandments. These alerts were delivered in two distinct ways. First, the Torah itself warned them of the disasters that would occur if they strayed from the right path. Second, the prophets continually rebuked them throughout the generations, yet these vital messages were ignored
