פרשת מטות

Numbers 32:15Sefaria

כִּ֤י תְשׁוּבֻן֙ מֵֽאַחֲרָ֔יו וְיָסַ֣ף ע֔וֹד לְהַנִּיח֖וֹ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְשִֽׁחַתֶּ֖ם לְכׇל־הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּֽה׃ {ס}

The tribes of Gad and Reuben face a critical moment where their personal choices carry massive weight for the entire nation. Moses issues a severe warning that highlights the destructive consequences of abandoning the shared commitment to conquer the land, linking their moral decision directly to the fate of the Israelites. His message mirrors his earlier rebukes. By turning away from God's path, they act exactly like previous generations of sinful men, and the threat that God will leave the people in the desert echoes the warning that their actions will only add to His anger [מלבי״ם].

While turning away from God usually implies a lack of reverence in the heart, the context of war and conquest gives it a more physical meaning here. Turning their backs represents a complete abandonment of the practical work and action required of them on the battlefield [אוהב גר].

If they fail to act, a heavy punishment awaits, though commentators view the nature of this consequence from different angles. The primary approach is that God will simply abandon the nation, leaving them stuck in the desert for an extended period [ביאור שטיינזלץ, חזקוני]. Another perspective suggests a more restless fate, where God will force the people to continue wandering and moving without rest [חזקוני]. A more conceptual view focuses on the Divine Presence. According to this idea, God will leave His own presence in the desert, reflecting the profound concept that wherever the Israelites are exiled, God goes into exile alongside them [שפתי כהן].

Moses concludes his message with a stark reality about their refusal to fight. The fallout will not be limited to a personal punishment for their own sin. Instead, their selfish actions will cause widespread harm, ultimately bringing ruin upon the entire nation [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם].
