פרשת מטות

Numbers 32:23Sefaria

The agreement between Moses and the tribes settling east of the Jordan River carries a severe warning. Failing to join the rest of the nation in conquering the land is not merely a broken contract, but a deep spiritual failure with unavoidable consequences. This failure could take different forms. The tribes might simply remain on the eastern side of the river [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or they might join the battle but fight for natural, strategic reasons rather than with the proper intention of fighting for God [מלבי״ם]. If they fail to uphold their end of the agreement, it proves retroactively that their original intentions were flawed from the very beginning [ספורנו]. Furthermore, avoiding an obligatory war against the enemies of God is considered a sin that they already bear [אור החיים].

Even if they fulfill their social duty to the rest of the nation by fighting, they still sin against God by choosing to live outside of His direct providence, which is uniquely present within the Land of Israel [העמק דבר]. Their spiritual failure is also evident in their distorted priorities. By expressing concern for their livestock before their children, they turned what is secondary into what is primary [מלבי״ם]. They justified this by viewing themselves as completely righteous, applying a religious principle that requires feeding one animals before oneself. However, Moses corrects this misconception. He hints at their spiritual shortcomings and demands that they prioritize the safety and care of their dependent family members first [חתם סופר].

The consequences for this failure are absolute and inescapable. The impact of their broken promise will actively pursue and strike them [רש ר הירש, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This unavoidable outcome will manifest in two distinct ways. In the immediate future, their sin will catch up to them during the dangers of battle. Just as soldiers with even minor spiritual flaws are removed from the front lines to avoid endangering the army, their failure will strip them of God's protection and success in war. This loss of divine support will publicly reveal that they were not as pure as they believed [אור החיים].

In the long term, living far from the holiness of the Land of Israel will leave them vulnerable. Because the land holiness provides crucial protection against negative desires, their distance will ultimately cause them to be the first to fall into idolatry and the first of the Israelite tribes to suffer exile [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם].
