במדבר, פרק ל״ב, פסוק כ״ז

פרשת מטות

Numbers 32:27Sefaria

The tribes of Gad and Reuben fully accept the conditions set for the military campaign to conquer the Land of Israel. They commit to leading the charge, blending physical military readiness with a precise spiritual mindset. Their pledge begins with an assurance that every soldier will be fully armed, eager, and prepared for active combat [אוהב גר]. This forms the core of their promise to participate directly and actively in the fighting [העמק דבר].

Beyond mere physical preparation, the tribes emphasize that their military advance will be conducted directly before God. This commitment means much more than simply marching at the front of the army. It reflects a deep belief that the impending war is miraculous and ultimately guided by God. They make sure to highlight this spiritual focus because Moses specifically demanded it, and they are determined to fulfill his condition completely [מלבי״ם, העמק דבר].

The tribes direct their final pledge to Moses himself [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Although the original command came from God, they treat Moses’ instructions as if they were the words of God. This equivalence stems from the fact that Moses serves as a pure vessel for the Holy Spirit and is constantly ready for prophecy, making his speech essentially divine. Alternatively, Moses is addressed with a title reflecting God because a person who attaches himself completely to God is sometimes called by God's own name, a pattern seen elsewhere with prophets and angels [רבנו בחיי].
