פרשת מטות

Numbers 32:31Sefaria

After Moses establishes the conditions for inheriting the land across the Jordan River, the tribes of Gad and Reuben reply with a declaration of absolute loyalty. Their response is not merely a simple agreement, but a statement designed to clear them of suspicion and clarify their deepest motives. By answering, they offer an additional layer of reinforcement to their previous promises [אבן עזרא]. They reply together in complete unity because Moses had just addressed Eleazar and Joshua in the presence of the entire nation. Through this unified response, the tribes seek to erase any lingering doubts about their sincerity or any suspicion that they harbor hidden reservations [העמק דבר].

In their pledge, the tribes attribute the instructions directly to God. This is notable because it was Moses who had just outlined the conditions. They intentionally frame their commitment this way to convey a specific message to their leader. They want Moses to know that there is no need to bind them with strict, repetitive legal stipulations. As far as they are concerned, the instructions given by Moses carry the exact same weight as the direct word of God, and Heaven forbid they should ever violate them [רמב״ן].

Another layer to their declaration involves the timing of the inheritance and the purity of their intentions. Their stance implies a request to be granted the land immediately, even before they march into battle. They view the upcoming war as a mandatory divine decree that they must fulfill regardless of the outcome [אור החיים]. Asking for the land in advance stems from a deep spiritual awareness. It is incredibly difficult to perform a Commandment purely for the sake of Heaven when expecting a reward at the end. If the tribes were to fight only to receive the territory afterward, their participation would be driven by personal benefit. By securing the land in advance, they guarantee that their willingness to go into battle is completely free of self-interest, allowing them to fight solely for a higher purpose. Moses recognizes the depth of their intention, accepts their reasoning, and grants them the land right away [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the spiritual purity of their motives, their decision to settle in the territories formerly ruled by Sihon and Og represents the acceptance of a major historical responsibility. Just as those former kings once guarded that specific region, the tribes of Gad and Reuben step into that role to protect the borders. By establishing themselves there, they commit to securing the frontier and fighting for the land of Israel on behalf of the entire nation [שפתי כהן].
