Numbers 32:17Sefaria

The proposal made by the tribes of Gad and Reuben represents a striking moral and strategic commitment. Rather than merely participating in the conquest of the land, the men pledge to lead the charge at the very front of the army, leaving their families behind under physical protection and divine care.

They promise to arm themselves with great speed and eagerness for the upcoming battles This rapid mobility is made possible precisely because they are leaving their families and heavy possessions behind on the eastern side of the Jordan River, unlike the rest of the Israelites who must travel with all their dependents and belongings [חזקוני]. Another perspective suggests that their preparation involves moving as a dense, tightly unified block—much like reeds bound together—ensuring that enemy forces cannot break their ranks during combat [בעל הטורים].

By stepping up as the pioneers at the head of the military forces, they fulfill a role well-suited to their reputation as mighty and capable warriors [רש״י]. Furthermore, since they are receiving their portion of land before anyone else, it is only proper that they take the lead in fighting for the rest of the nation [חזקוני]. This bold declaration is specifically intended to erase any suspicions Moses might harbor. It proves that they are not trying to dodge the war out of cowardice; rather, they are eager to be the first to rush to the front lines [העמק דבר]. They commit to leading the military campaign continuously until they have successfully brought their fellow Israelites into their rightful territories on the western side of the Jordan [ספורנו, שטיינזלץ].

While the men are away fighting, their children and families will reside in fortified cities. This arrangement is put into effect immediately, securing the vulnerable populations while the men are far away with their brothers To achieve this, the men first have to rebuild these fortifications from scratch, as the original cities were completely destroyed during the recent regional wars Strong defenses are necessary due to the lingering threat of the local inhabitants. Even though the Israelites have already defeated kings like Sihon and Og, there is still a real danger that surviving remnants of local nations or neighboring eastern forces might exploit the absence of the fighting men to attack those left behind

Ultimately, the willingness to leave their wives and children behind demonstrates an absolute reliance on God's protection. Without His divine watchfulness, physical walls would never be enough to protect cities stripped of their military [העמק דבר]. Moreover, guaranteeing the safety of their children in these fortresses is a practical necessity. It is only the certainty that their families are secure that allows these warriors to commit to such a prolonged absence. They promise not to return home after merely seven years of conquest, but to remain on the front lines for a full fourteen years, ensuring every single tribe is settled in its land [אור החיים].
