Proverbs 14:25Sefaria

מַצִּ֣יל נְ֭פָשׁוֹת עֵ֣ד אֱמֶ֑ת וְיָפִ֖חַ כְּזָבִ֣ים מִרְמָֽה׃

Words spoken in a courtroom do far more than establish dry facts; they hold the power to determine fates, bringing either life or destruction. A person who offers honest testimony ensures that justice is done, clearing the innocent and bringing the guilty to face their penalty [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that an honest witness literally saves lives. This happens when innocent people are rescued from a death sentence caused by false accusations [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, אמרי דעת]. Such honesty also protects society as a whole from violence and injustice [רלב״ג]. Furthermore, testifying truthfully against a murderer ensures the criminal is stopped, which protects future victims from harm [מצודת דוד]. The impact of this honesty extends far beyond a single individual; saving one person also rescues their dependents and all the generations that will eventually follow, making it an act that saves countless lives [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond the legal system, an honest witness represents a wise person who is not afraid to speak the truth to the wealthy and powerful. By doing so, they save these leaders from spiritual ruin [אלשיך]. On a philosophical level, an honest witness can be compared to a solid, logical proof that rescues a person's mind from false beliefs and harmful opinions [עמנואל הרומי].

In sharp contrast stands the false witness who speaks misleading words. Rather than telling an obvious, outright lie, this person shares partial truths that seem correct in the moment but are designed to deceive [מלבי״ם]. While the honest witness rescues the innocent, the deceitful witness helps the guilty escape punishment [מצודת דוד], ultimately causing deep disappointment and destroying human lives [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. This contrast reveals a profound moral lesson. A person might be tempted to lie in court to save someone from a death sentence. However, attempting to rescue someone through falsehood is nothing more than absolute deceit. True preservation of life can only be achieved through the truth [מלבי״ם].
