Proverbs 14:5Sefaria

עֵ֣ד אֱ֭מוּנִים לֹ֣א יְכַזֵּ֑ב וְיָפִ֥יחַ כְּ֝זָבִ֗ים עֵ֣ד שָֽׁקֶר׃

A person's everyday speech serves as a reliable measure of their integrity during critical moments of testing. Good and bad traits operate in harmony with an individual's core character. The acquisition of one positive trait indicates the presence of others, as outcomes always reflect the source from which they flow [אמרי דעת]. A faithful witness is simply someone who is accustomed to speaking the truth in their daily life [אבן עזרא]. Because this person despises dishonesty and avoids it in routine matters, they can be entirely trusted when called upon to give formal testimony. Such an individual does not waste words lightly [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ], and the truth they speak is stable, enduring forever [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, a person who habitually spreads lies, plays tricks, or speaks falsely about trivial things will inevitably act as a false witness. Because of this poor habit, any testimony they offer is inherently unreliable and requires thorough investigation [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The act of spreading these falsehoods relies on a subtle distinction between different types of untruths. An outright lie is immediately obvious to everyone, making it useless for a false witness who wants to be believed. Instead, the dishonest witness relies on deceit—statements that appear true at first but are eventually exposed as false. To achieve this, the witness spreads their words carefully, using partial and incomplete statements. By holding back information, they ensure the deception is not immediately recognized, spreading their deceit through trickery [מלבי״ם].

On a philosophical level, witnesses can be compared to the foundational premises of a logical argument. When the premises are true and reliable, the resulting conclusion will also be true. However, if even a single premise is flawed, acting as a false witness, it will inevitably produce a wrong and deceitful conclusion [עמנואל הרומי].

In the spiritual realm, the faithful witness represents the eternal laws of wisdom and faith, whose words remain correct forever. In contrast, a foolish person uses misleading logic and false doubts to argue against this wisdom, though their lies ultimately collapse [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective views the faithful witness as the Holy Spirit, which testifies that a person who fears God is walking on a straight and proper path. Opposing this, the false witness attempts to deceitfully claim that upright individuals are actually driven by arrogance [אלשיך].
