Proverbs 14:26Sefaria

בְּיִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הֹוָה מִבְטַח־עֹ֑ז וּ֝לְבָנָ֗יו יִהְיֶ֥ה מַחְסֶֽה׃

A life rooted in the fear of God offers a double layer of protection, securing both the individual in the present and their children in the future. For the person themselves, God becomes a strong fortress and a reliable support during difficult times. A person who lacks this fear lives in constant anxiety, unable to find true security in life or in death [עמנואל הרומי]. Fearing God dispels everyday worries about losing one's livelihood or social standing, replacing them with a deep confidence that He will provide and protect their place in the world [אלשיך].

While human intelligence is valuable, wisdom alone cannot provide a secure foundation, as personal desires can easily cause a person to stumble. It is only when the fear of God comes before wisdom that a person is truly safe. This fear binds the soul's natural drives with morality, preventing them from going astray and creating a genuinely stable inner security [מלבי״ם].

This security extends far beyond a single lifetime, transforming into a protective shield for the next generation. The merit of a God-fearing parent actively saves their children from future harm. Even if the children do not reach the same high spiritual level as their parent, they can still find refuge within the spiritual fortress their parent built during their lifetime [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A subtle shift occurs in how this protection operates. The parent engages in an active state of trust, and that active faith turns into an objective shelter that automatically covers their children [מלבי״ם].

A clear example of this dynamic is Abraham, whose deep fear of God earned an eternal promise and ongoing protection for all his descendants [רש״י]. Ultimately, this profound fear provides more than just physical safety in the present world. It extends into the world to come, granting eternal life to the soul of the individual and offering lasting spiritual benefits to their descendants [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת].
