People often go through life believing their private actions and secret thoughts go unnoticed. In reality, every step a person takes is completely visible, carefully measured, and deeply understood by God. A person's entire lifestyle and daily habits are laid bare directly before Him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that God observes and evaluates every human action. When an individual secretly imagines that their faults are hidden, they are met with the reality that all their paths are directly in sight [מצודת דוד]. God meticulously weighs and measures these paths to calculate the exact balance of merits and faults a person has accumulated. This careful evaluation ensures that every individual receives a precise, measure-for-measure response to their actions. It serves as a reminder that consequences are never random, but rather the direct result of divine providence [רש״י, רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי, מצודת דוד]. This constant and close supervision is fully granted to those who choose a life of wisdom and morality, as their actions are weighed favorably. In contrast, those who act wickedly distance themselves from God's guiding providence and ultimately become trapped by their own wrongdoing [אמרי דעת].
This absolute divine awareness naturally raises a question about free will. If God sees and knows everything in advance, one might wonder if human actions are predetermined, making moral correction pointless. However, while God observes and knows the paths ahead of time, it is the individual who weighs their options and ultimately decides which route to take. God's foreknowledge does not force a person's hand, and complete free will remains entirely with the individual [אלשיך].
A different perspective distinguishes between the various types of routes a person might travel. There is the straight, clearly paved path of standard religious practice, and there is the indirect, circular route. At times, a person is required to step off the straight path and take an indirect route. This might happen when someone goes above and beyond the strict letter of the law, or when an exceptional situation requires temporarily bending a standard rule for a higher ultimate good. In these unique moments, God guides and directs even the winding path, ensuring that it eventually leads to the correct and righteous destination [מלבי״ם].
