לִשְׁמֹ֥ר מְזִמּ֑וֹת וְ֝דַ֗עַת שְׂפָתֶ֥יךָ יִנְצֹֽרוּ׃

Internalizing wisdom is not merely an intellectual exercise; it demands a deep connection between the quiet world of internal thought and the active realm of spoken words. This dual process is designed to protect a person from temptation and ensure that acquired knowledge remains firmly rooted over time.

The first step focuses on the mind, calling for the preservation of wise thoughts and deep counsel within the heart [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. Safeguarding the mind operates on several levels. It guides a person toward discovering genuine understanding [רלב״ג] and provides the clarity needed to examine the pathways of wisdom [עמנואל הרומי]. Furthermore, when a person fully invests their heart in Torah, this deep engagement actively shields their mind from negative or harmful thoughts [אלשיך].

However, internal understanding alone is not enough to keep knowledge from fading. To ensure that wisdom is not lost, it must transition into active expression. The primary approach among commentators is that wisdom is preserved through speech. The lips serve as the tool that brings Torah and knowledge from mere potential into reality. Articulating these concepts aloud is what permanently anchors them in the mind and prevents forgetfulness [אבן עזרא, אלשיך, אמרי דעת]. Once a person reaches a state of clear, well-founded knowledge, the very lips that express this understanding are the ones that protect and maintain it [מלבי״ם].

Beyond preserving memory, controlling one's speech acts as a vital defensive wall. Carefully measured words protect a person from speaking inappropriately, prevent personal errors, and offer a rescue from the misleading lies of others [ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. Ultimately, this double safeguard of disciplined thought and articulated speech is essential for wisdom to truly take hold. Together, they form a necessary defense, preparing a person to withstand the severe temptations and negative illusions that threaten to lead them astray [רלב״ג, אמרי דעת].
