Proverbs 5:10Sefaria

פֶּֽן־יִשְׂבְּע֣וּ זָרִ֣ים כֹּחֶ֑ךָ וַ֝עֲצָבֶ֗יךָ בְּבֵ֣ית נׇכְרִֽי׃

Chasing forbidden desires and straying from the proper path leads to a tragic draining of a person's life force. Instead of building a lasting legacy, an individual's hard-earned achievements, energy, and resources are siphoned away by outside forces, leaving nothing for themselves or their rightful heirs.

The primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a warning against severe financial ruin. Years of exhausting labor and accumulated wealth are ultimately surrendered to strangers who have done nothing to earn them [מצודת דוד]. This devastating loss often occurs because illicit relationships are frequently backed by mechanisms designed to extort money [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or simply because the family of the forbidden woman ends up enjoying the fruits of the sinner's hard work [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond financial ruin, the loss extends to the next generation. A person's physical vitality and creative energy are meant to shape children who carry their father's image. However, when these energies are misdirected, those children are born and raised in an unfamiliar, distant environment. They become part of the foreign woman's family, creating a profound alienation where the father is completely disconnected from his offspring and will never experience the joy of raising them [עמנואל הרומי, מלבי״ם]. This estrangement creates a painful distance that goes far beyond interacting with mere strangers [מלבי״ם].

On a psychological level, giving in to these temptations results in a complete drain of inner vitality. A person's bodily powers are exhausted by destructive physical desires that are entirely alien to the rational mind. Investing time and energy into these empty pursuits empties an individual of their strength, yielding absolutely no genuine benefit [אמרי דעת].

Spiritually, this misdirection of resources takes on an even darker tone. It can manifest as financial support for false prophets who use deception to funnel a person's earnings into houses of idol worship [רש״י]. Ultimately, whenever a person sins and follows their base urges—whether through forbidden actions or dishonestly acquiring wealth—they are actively transferring their spiritual energy and the very root of their soul over to forces of impurity. Rather than building a reservoir of holiness and gathering spiritual treasures, they surrender their essence to foreign, corrupting powers [אלשיך].
