Proverbs 9:15Sefaria

לִקְרֹ֥א לְעֹֽבְרֵי־דָ֑רֶךְ הַֽ֝מְיַשְּׁרִ֗ים אֹֽרְחוֹתָֽם׃

Foolishness is not a passive force waiting to be stumbled upon; it is highly proactive. It actively reaches out and calls to humanity, using the exact same language and tone that Wisdom uses to draw people in [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this deceptive call is specifically aimed at innocent, honest people who are already walking uprightly in the ways of God. The goal of this lustful force is to incite them to sin, deceive them, and pull them off their good path [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. This stands in stark contrast to the way Wisdom operates. Wisdom calls out to those who are already lost and wandering, hoping to guide them back to the right direction [אבן עזרא].

Others suggest that foolishness targets individuals deeply engaged in intellectual pursuits [רלב״ג], or those who are still searching for their direction in life, having not yet refined their character or settled their minds. Human nature is inherently upright, and these travelers genuinely want to do what is right. However, they are highly vulnerable to straying off course when distracted by physical desires and negative imaginations [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To understand exactly how foolishness operates, one must look at the layout of a person's journey. There is a primary, general road, but there are also smaller, private, branching trails. It is specifically on these narrow, individual trails that doubts and mistakes arise, and this is exactly where foolishness sets its traps [מלבי״ם].

The method of seduction works in layers. First, foolishness presents sin as something sweet, pleasant, and deeply enjoyable [מצודת דוד]. It plants grand illusions in a person's mind, promising worldly success and high status [אלשיך]. It preys on the human tendency to crave distant and forbidden pleasures, which often seem far more thrilling than the good things that are readily available and permitted. Through this, foolishness tempts those with weak resolve to sink completely into physical indulgence. The victim remains completely unaware of the massive damage being done to their soul, a destruction that ultimately ends in severe spiritual punishment [אמרי דעת].
