Proverbs 9:16Sefaria

מִֽי־פֶ֭תִי יָסֻ֣ר הֵ֑נָּה וַחֲסַר־לֵ֝֗ב וְאָ֣מְרָה לּֽוֹ׃

The seductive voice of folly and worldly desires echoes through the streets, carefully mimicking the methods of wisdom. She reaches out to passersby, offering to share her life experience [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Her call specifically targets inexperienced youth who have not yet lived long enough to acquire true knowledge [אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This audience is characterized as lacking sense, which can be understood as an absence of willpower and self-control that leaves a person unable to resist their urges [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, the various descriptions of her victims may simply be a poetic way of expressing the exact same idea [מצודת דוד].

It might seem strange that a seductive figure would try to attract followers by calling them insulting names. In reality, she does not address her listeners with derogatory terms. The text itself applies these labels to her victims because of the bitter fate that awaits them, highlighting their failure to see the shallow nature of the pleasures she offers [אבן עזרא]. In practice, she calls out to anyone walking by, even those who are living proper, upright lives. Her strategy relies on the hope that while not everyone will fall for her trap, the simple-minded eventually will [עמנואל הרומי].

She twists reality, trying to convince people that avoiding worldly pleasures is actually the true foolishness [מצודת דוד]. Her goal is to tempt people into abandoning the hard work and effort required to gain wisdom. In its place, she offers the easy path of surrendering to physical desires, material success, and readily available temptations [רלב״ג, אלשיך]. Once she successfully identifies a person lacking understanding who is willing to turn her way, she changes her approach. She then speaks to him directly, pulling him close to whisper her specific promises into his ear [רש״י, עמנואל הרומי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
