תהלים, פרק ק״ו, פסוק ט״ו

Psalms 106:15Sefaria

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לָ֭הֶם שֶׁאֱלָתָ֑ם וַיְשַׁלַּ֖ח רָז֣וֹן בְּנַפְשָֽׁם׃

Fulfilling human desires is not always a blessing, and sometimes the granting of a wish can lead directly to destruction. This reality played out during the tragic events in the desert at the Graves of Craving, where the Israelites demanded meat. God answered their request by bringing down quail for them to eat. However, He provided only what they explicitly asked for. He did not satisfy other hidden urges they harbored at the time, such as a craving for forbidden relationships [אלשיך]. Furthermore, their demand for meat did not stem from simple hunger or physical appetite. It was rooted in a lack of faith and a deliberate attempt to test God's power and ability in the wilderness [מלבי״ם].

Immediately after their request was granted, disaster struck in the form of severe physical weakness and the wasting away of their bodies [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this reaction was a manifestation of God's anger, leading to the death of the people as the meat became completely repulsive to them [רש״י, אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ, מאירי].

Beyond the punishment itself, there is a bitter irony in their physical deterioration. The Israelites had complained that the manna was drying them out, hoping that eating meat would satisfy, fatten, and strengthen them. Instead, the exact opposite occurred. The meat triggered a physical decline that left them even thinner and weaker, ultimately reaching a point where their souls could no longer sustain their bodies [רד״ק, אלשיך, מצודת דוד].

Had their demand been driven purely by a physical appetite, they would have eventually felt full and stopped eating before it was too late. Yet, because their original motive was to test God, they never found genuine satisfaction and never felt regret. Driven by this underlying rebellion, they continued to consume the meat until it brought about their death [מלבי״ם].
