Psalms 106:20Sefaria

The incident of the Golden Calf represents a deep and tragic contradiction. After experiencing a supreme revelation of God, the Israelites chose to trade the very source of their life for a lowly and shameful idol. While they are described as exchanging "their glory," commentators agree that this actually refers to God's glory. This phrasing is recognized as one of the ancient scribal corrections, intentionally softened to protect the honor of Heaven and avoid associating disgrace directly with God

This exchange creates a sharp and painful contrast. The Israelites, who had just witnessed the glory of God at Mount Sinai, traded that divine presence for a golden statue of a calf The absurdity of this choice is profound. It is baffling that a nation nourished by heavenly manna, existing on such a high spiritual plane, would degrade themselves by worshipping a creature sustained by something as common and lowly as grass [אלשיך].

Naturally, the metal statue did not eat, but the description points to the living animal the idol represents [רד״ק]. The primary approach among commentators is that highlighting the animal's diet serves to magnify the extreme shame, ugliness, and disgrace of this idolatrous act To fully capture the lowliness of the idol, the grazing ox is depicted as a deeply repulsive beast. Some explain that while an ox eats, it constantly soils the grass with its drool [מצודת דוד]. Others add that the animal produces a large amount of waste and frequently covers itself in its own filth [רש״י].

Ultimately, driven by a complete forgetfulness of the God who performed profound miracles for them in Egypt and at the sea, the Israelites traded their true splendor for the image of a repulsive and shameful beast [מאירי].
