Psalms 106:28Sefaria

וַ֭יִּצָּ֣מְדוּ לְבַ֣עַל פְּע֑וֹר וַ֝יֹּאכְל֗וּ זִבְחֵ֥י מֵתִֽים׃

Following the encounters with Balak and Balaam, the Israelites camped in Shittim, where they faced a deep spiritual crisis. Tempted by Moabite women, they fell into immorality and began worshipping foreign gods [מאירי]. This tragic decline was not sudden. It was the direct result of their earlier rejection of the Holy Land, a choice that left them spiritually vulnerable and dragged them into impurity [אלשיך].

The connection they formed with the idol Baal Peor [מצודת דוד] is understood in different ways. Some describe this bond as a tight, permanent grip, likening it to a securely sealed vessel [מאירי, מצודת ציון]. Others view the attachment as loose and superficial. They compare it to a woman's bracelet hanging loosely on a wrist, which stands in sharp contrast to the absolute and enduring devotion the Israelites truly share with God. This idea of jewelry also serves as a subtle reminder of the Moabite women who lured them into the sin [אבן עזרא, אלשיך].

A unique physical explanation sheds light on their intense attraction to this specific idol. While in the desert, the Israelites ate manna, a miraculous food entirely absorbed by their bodies without producing physical waste. Over time, the people grew terrified that their stomachs would swell and burst. The rituals of Baal Peor actually involved relaxing the bowels and defecating. When the Israelites discovered this, they eagerly joined in the worship, driven by an overwhelming desire for physical relief [מאירי].

As they fell deeper into the trap, the Israelites accepted the women's invitations to feast on the sacrificial meals dedicated to their gods [מאירי]. These idols are mockingly described as dead. The primary approach among commentators is that this highlights the complete lack of life in idol worship, comparing the false gods to lifeless corpses.

Beyond the historical events and the mockery of false gods, the Sages learn strict religious laws from this comparison between idol offerings and a dead body. Just as a human corpse transfers severe impurity to anyone sharing its physical space, is forbidden for any benefit, and never loses its forbidden status, the exact same rules apply to idol sacrifices and wine poured for pagan worship. They carry a severe impurity and remain forever forbidden [תורה תמימה].
