תהלים, פרק ק״ו, פסוק כ״ד

Psalms 106:24Sefaria

וַֽ֭יִּמְאֲסוּ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ חֶמְדָּ֑ה לֹא־הֶ֝אֱמִ֗ינוּ לִדְבָרֽוֹ׃

Following the tragedy of the golden calf, a new breaking point emerges in the history of the Israelites: the sin of the spies. This moment marks a profound failure of faith and a tragic rejection of the Promised Land. The Israelites turned their backs on this desirable destination by sending the spies and accepting their slanderous report. By embracing the false claim that it was a dangerous land that devours its inhabitants, they actively rejected the good future they had been promised. This rejection was not necessarily a sudden impulse. It can be seen as an ongoing process that actually began earlier, rooted in a prior lack of respect and appreciation for Moses at Hazeroth [אלשיך].

The true severity of this event lies in a fundamental lack of belief. The primary approach among commentators is that the Israelites simply did not believe God's promise. They doubted His assurance that the land was good and that they possessed the strength to conquer and inherit it. When commanded to go up and take possession of the land, they refused to trust His word. It was this very lack of faith that drove them to demand spies in the first place, rather than marching forward to fight without fear [מאירי]. Alternatively, this deep-seated doubt may have been directed specifically at Moses, as the people failed to believe his personal assurances that they were heading toward a land flowing with milk and honey [אלשיך].
