תהלים, פרק ק״ו, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 106:12Sefaria

וַיַּאֲמִ֥ינוּ בִדְבָרָ֑יו יָ֝שִׁ֗ירוּ תְּהִלָּתֽוֹ׃

Following the monumental miracle of the parting of the Red Sea, a profound shift in consciousness swept through the Israelites. Standing on the shore and witnessing the destruction of their pursuers, they reached a state of complete faith that culminated in a unified song of praise.

The primary approach among commentators is that this newfound belief arose specifically after the Israelites saw the Egyptian army dead on the shore. This realization immediately gave birth to their famous song of gratitude at the sea.

To fully grasp the depth of this renewed faith, it is necessary to understand the doubts that existed beforehand. Previously, the Israelites might have assumed that the plagues in Egypt were simply a result of God being angry with Pharaoh for disrespecting Him. In that light, the demand to free the people might have seemed like a mere excuse to punish the Egyptian ruler. However, the events at the sea changed their perspective entirely. They watched the entire Egyptian army drown while Pharaoh was deliberately kept alive. It became clear that if God were acting solely to avenge His own honor, Pharaoh would have been the first to die. Seeing Pharaoh spared while the army was destroyed proved that God's primary motivation was the actual salvation of Israel, not just the punishment of a disrespectful king. Recognizing that God acted out of a genuine desire to save them is what finally led the people to believe wholeheartedly in His promises [אלשיך].

The magnificent song that followed was not merely a natural emotional reaction to their survival, but a direct divine reward. As a result of their pure faith, God bestowed the Holy Spirit upon the people. This divine inspiration allowed the entire nation to sing together in absolute harmony. Every single person uttered the exact same words at the precise same moment, creating a flawless and unified chorus of praise [אלשיך].
