Psalms 106:39Sefaria

וַיִּטְמְא֥וּ בְמַעֲשֵׂיהֶ֑ם וַ֝יִּזְנ֗וּ בְּמַ֥עַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃

The spiritual decline of the Israelites was not a sudden collapse, but a gradual descent into impurity and a turning away from the right path. This shift from their original, elevated state into a reality of sin created a deep fracture between them and God. This resulting state of impurity was especially jarring precisely because the nation was fundamentally holy at its core [אבן עזרא].

The defilement occurred as a direct result of imitating the behaviors of the surrounding nations [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Observing their neighbors, the Israelites were puzzled as to why these foreign groups lived in peace while they themselves endured suffering. This confusion led them to a tragic mistake: they concluded that they needed to deepen their involvement in idol worship. What they failed to understand was that the surrounding nations were simply acting according to their natural state. The Israelites, however, belong exclusively to God. By mimicking these foreign practices, they actively defiled themselves, which is why they alone faced punishment for these actions [אלשיך].

As the decline continued, they engaged in acts of unfaithfulness. The primary approach among commentators is that this unfaithfulness does not necessarily describe physical acts, but rather expresses the broader concept of turning away from the proper path. Just as an unfaithful spouse abandons the ways of modesty, the Israelites abandoned the truth that was fitting for them, chased after emptiness, and turned away from God. On the other hand, some interpret this unfaithfulness literally, explaining that the nation sank into severe physical sins of immorality [רד״ק, אלשיך].

This descent happened in two distinct stages, marking a severe worsening of their spiritual condition. Initially, the Israelites sinned only on a superficial, external level. However, because they did not turn back from their bad choices, these external actions evolved into deeply ingrained habits. The sins took root within them, transforming into permanent traits of their soul that naturally leaned toward immorality and murder. This final stage, where wrongdoing became an inseparable part of their character, was far worse than their initial offenses [מלבי״ם].
