Psalms 108:3Sefaria

ע֭וּרָֽה הַנֵּ֥בֶל וְכִנּ֗וֹר אָעִ֥ירָה שָּֽׁחַר׃

A musician's deepest passion is often to fill the quietest hours with song. Rather than waiting for the sun to rise, a true servant of God actively seeks to bring the morning forward through music and praise. The poet speaks directly to his musical instruments in a passionate plea, urging them to join him in early praise to the Creator. He does not passively wait for the daylight [מצודת ציון]. Instead, he uses poetic imagery, speaking to his stringed instruments as if they possess a life of their own and can wake up by themselves [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. He asks his instruments to rise early so that their music can literally awaken the new day [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that the poet calls his instruments to action at the exact moment he rouses them from their silent sleep, preparing to sing to God each morning [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. This dynamic paints a unique picture of King David, setting him apart from all other rulers. While ordinary kings sleep until the morning light wakes them, David proudly declares that he is the one who wakes the dawn, rising to serve God as early as midnight [רש״י].

This midnight routine is tied to a miraculous tradition. A harp hung above David's bed, and when midnight arrived, a northern wind would blow through its strings. The instrument would begin to play on its own, waking the king from his slumber [רש״י, מאירי]. Building on this tradition is a deeper spiritual request. David asks God not to wait until his human heart is fully prepared to begin serving Him. Instead, he asks God to initiate the process. By causing the wind to blow and the harp to play, God provides the first spark of inspiration. Only after receiving this initial divine wake-up call does David find the strength to rise and awaken the dawn [אלשיך].
