תהלים, פרק קי״א, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 111:3Sefaria

הוֹד־וְהָדָ֥ר פׇּעֳל֑וֹ וְ֝צִדְקָת֗וֹ עֹמֶ֥דֶת לָעַֽד׃

The majesty of God's actions in the world and the eternal nature of His righteousness form the foundation of existence. The splendor of creation is vast, though commentators view its scope in different ways. It can be understood as the initial shaping of the heavens and the earth [רד״ק], or specifically the formation of the higher celestial spheres [מאירי]. Alternatively, this majesty is not just a past event but an ongoing process, with God renewing creation every single moment [מלבי״ם]. Despite the exalted nature of these divine actions, they remain perfectly clear and visible to anyone who takes the time to observe them [אבן עזרא].

The beauty of this creation exists on multiple levels. It is composed of both the hidden, spiritual forces that God planted within the world, as well as the external, tangible beauty that people can easily perceive with their senses [מלבי״ם]. This dual nature points to the spiritual root of the universe. Even though the world we live in is physical, God brought it into being through higher spiritual garments of glory and majesty [אלשיך].

Alongside the beauty of the physical world, every action God takes is firmly rooted in justice [אבן עזרא]. In fact, the very existence of the universe is a profound act of kindness and charity toward all created beings [רד״ק]. Human charity is naturally temporary, but this divine charity is firmly established and lasts forever [מצודת דוד].

This eternal divine charity is clearly reflected in the laws of nature. God established the natural order through His absolute will, creating a permanent and unchanging system, which stands in contrast to miracles that are merely temporary events [מלבי״ם]. A clear example of this enduring stability is the separation of the dry land from the oceans. By nature, water should cover the earth, yet God set a permanent boundary for the sea, creating a stable living environment that lasts forever [מאירי].

This eternal righteousness also answers the question of how righteous people are rewarded. Because no human being can ever claim that God owes them anything, any reward a person receives is purely an act of divine charity. For this reason, the true and complete reward is not distributed in this physical, passing world. Instead, it is preserved and endures forever in the spiritual and eternal World to Come [אלשיך].
