תהלים, פרק קי״ג, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 113:9Sefaria

מֽוֹשִׁיבִ֨י ׀ עֲקֶ֬רֶת הַבַּ֗יִת אֵֽם־הַבָּנִ֥ים שְׂמֵחָ֗ה הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃ {פ}

God's active involvement in the world is most clearly seen when He overturns the rigid laws of nature, transforming a reality of deep sorrow into one of profound and lasting joy. This immense kindness is vividly illustrated through the experience of a childless woman whose physical and emotional state undergoes a dramatic reversal. In her former state, she could find no peace. Overwhelmed by grief, she would wander the streets to distract herself from her heavy pain. However, God steps in, opens her womb, and settles her with a sense of calm, permanence, and stability inside her own home [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This concept of a home extends far beyond a physical structure; it represents the establishment of a lasting family and a future dynasty [אבן עזרא].

The nature of this miracle takes various forms. In some cases, it involves a woman who entirely lacks a physical womb, requiring God to create a completely new reality within her, much like the matriarch Sarah [אלשיך]. In a very different scenario, it might be a woman who intentionally drank a sterilizing potion to preserve her youth and beauty, yet God's providence heals her regardless [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the result is the same: she is transformed into a joyful mother, happily surrounded by her children within her home.

On a national scale, this personal transformation serves as a powerful metaphor for the people of Israel and the city of Zion. Zion is often pictured as a lonely, barren woman. Yet, God promises to resettle her in her rightful home and fill her with her returning children, restoring her ultimate joy [רש״י, מאירי].

Jewish tradition also applies this theme of the joyful mother to specific, heroic figures in history. One such figure is Yocheved, the mother of Moses. When her husband Amram took her back and remarried her after a forced separation caused by Pharaoh's harsh decrees, a miracle occurred. The physical signs of her youth and beauty were restored, and ministering angels sang before her, celebrating her as a joyful mother. Another tradition connects this idea to the tragic and heroic story of a woman and her seven sons. When her children refused one by one to bow to an idol, choosing instead to die to sanctify God's name before the emperor, a heavenly voice rang out after their deaths, declaring her a joyful mother [תורה תמימה].

Witnessing these immense wonders, from the overturning of natural laws to the precision of God's personal care, leaves us with a clear obligation. We are called to constantly offer our thanks and praise to God for His limitless abilities and kindness [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, אלשיך, מצודת דוד].
