While the dead are silent and unable to offer praise, the living possess a clear and active purpose: to recognize God and express eternal gratitude to Him. Those who revere God and acknowledge Him as the Master of everything are the ones who are granted life and goodness [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Recognizing His endless kindness, the nation of Israel understands that the only possible way to repay God is through genuine gratitude and active, spoken blessing [אלשיך, אבן עזרא].
This commitment to praise God stretches continuously from the present moment into eternity, a concept understood on two distinct levels. On one level, it speaks to the eternal nature of the soul. The present moment represents life in this physical world, while eternity points toward the World to Come. Even after physical death, the eternal souls of the righteous will continue to offer praise to God forever [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי].
On another level, this ongoing timeline reflects a deep confidence in future redemption. Rather than waiting for the ultimate salvation to arrive before offering thanks, Israel is guided by the Holy Spirit to praise God immediately. They bless Him right now, as if the promised good has already been fulfilled, because His promises are absolutely certain [אלשיך]. This unbroken praise is also fueled by a deep appreciation for the blessings and goodness that God constantly renews in every moment [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, this leads to a universal call to praise God at all times, emphasizing the special importance of doing so while a person is still alive and capable of active expression [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].
