תהלים, פרק קי״ה, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 115:3Sefaria

וֵאלֹהֵ֥ינוּ בַשָּׁמָ֑יִם כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁר־חָפֵ֣ץ עָשָֽׂה׃

Faced with the mockery of foreign nations who demand to know the location of the invisible God of Israel, a sharp theological response emerges. The nations view the world through a strictly physical lens, relying on what they can see and touch. In stark contrast, God's absolute sovereignty and constant guidance over the world remain absolute, even though He is hidden from human eyes.

God's position in the heavens reflects His total dominion over both the upper and lower realms, holding all power firmly in His hands [רד״ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The heavens serve as the ultimate source from which all decrees descend to the earth below [אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, the very concept of dwelling on high projects immense strength. Just as a physically weak person gains a strategic advantage from a high vantage point, God's actions from the heavens demonstrate unmatched, overwhelming might [מצודת דוד].

Although God is in the heavens, He is by no means disconnected from the earth. The nations mistakenly assume that God removed His presence to the skies and completely abandoned the physical world. Yet, His constant, watchful care extends over every single individual [מלבי״ם]. Even if the visible Divine presence retreated upward following the destruction of the Temple, God's active guidance never ceased for a moment [אלשיך]. This reality stands in direct opposition to the idols worshipped by the nations. Those false gods are physically close, tangible, and rest on the earth right in front of their worshippers, yet they are completely useless. God, meanwhile, directs the entire world exactly as He desires from His place on high [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

God's ability to do exactly as He pleases highlights not only His power to execute His will without any interference, but also the eternal consistency of His strength, which remains as vast today as it has always been [מצודת דוד]. More importantly, this truth dismantles the claim that God suddenly changed His mind about Israel and decided out of nowhere to harm or enslave them. In truth, God knew from the very beginning, as far back as the days of Abraham, that the people would eventually sin. The resulting exile was always part of His original, ancient plan. Therefore, everything God has done aligns perfectly with what He intended from the start; nothing that occurred was a surprise or a sudden shift in His design [אלשיך].
