Man-made idols stand completely helpless, entirely cut off from the physical world. Though they are crafted to resemble living beings, they lack any true sensory perception. While their lack of various senses highlights their lifelessness, the act of eating is intentionally ignored. Since these statues are not living creatures, they naturally have no need for food to sustain themselves [אבן עזרא].

Their physical features are completely useless. They are carved with noses, yet they cannot experience any scent [מאירי], lacking the basic ability to smell [מצודת ציון]. Their stillness is absolute. Beyond their failure to take in any impressions from their surroundings, they are also entirely mute. They cannot produce even the faintest noise, a slight whisper, or a simple chirp from their throats [רד״ק].
