Psalms 115:16Sefaria

הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם שָׁ֭מַיִם לַיהֹוָ֑ה וְ֝הָאָ֗רֶץ נָתַ֥ן לִבְנֵי־אָדָֽם׃

A fundamental boundary exists within creation, establishing a clear division of roles and spaces between the Creator and His creations. It draws a line between the higher divine sphere and the physical world entrusted to humanity, ultimately defining the true nature of human control on earth.

The heavens are God's exclusive domain, a space where His presence and actions are absolute [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The boundary separating these two worlds is profound. The Divine Presence has never fully descended to the earth, just as human beings—even the greatest figures like Moses and Elijah—have never truly ascended into the highest heavens [תורה תמימה]. Instead of entering the heavenly realm, humanity's role regarding the skies is simply to observe the order of reality within them, using that observation to recognize God's existence [מאירי].

Conversely, the earth is the designated space for human action [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It was given to humanity as a realm of free will. A person can choose to sink entirely into materialism, ultimately ending their life as mere dust, or they can use the physical world strictly for their necessary needs to elevate themselves toward eternal life [מאירי]. A connection to the physical earth is so essential to human existence that a person without land is considered to be lacking their completeness as a human being [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, this current world is entirely sufficient and complete, meaning God has no need to create a new heaven and earth [אלשיך].

However, the idea that the earth was given to humanity can easily lead to a dangerous misunderstanding. Foolish and wicked individuals often interpret this to mean that humans rule the earth absolutely and independently, just as God rules the heavens. This mistaken belief leads them to cast off all moral responsibility and deny any need for divine providence [אבן עזרא, תורה תמימה]. The primary approach among commentators completely rejects this idea. God's kingdom rules over everything, and He continues to watch over the earth from His heavenly home, granting it to the upright so that they may be a source of blessing [מצודת דוד].

Humanity's possession of the earth does not make them absolute masters, but rather appointed guardians and stewards on behalf of God. If people recognize this dependent status, God allows them to remain in their role. But if they rebel and refuse to acknowledge their Creator, God has the right to end their lives, remove them from their position, and grant the earth to others [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].

The practical way a person earns the right to enjoy the earth's abundance is through the act of a blessing. Before a person recites a blessing, the entire world belongs exclusively to God. Anyone who takes pleasure in this world without a blessing is considered to be stealing from the sacred property of heaven. However, once a person blesses and openly acknowledges their Creator, the earth and its bounty are permitted and rightfully given to them for use [תורה תמימה].
