תהלים, פרק קי״ח, פסוק ח׳

Psalms 118:8Sefaria

ט֗וֹב לַחֲס֥וֹת בַּיהֹוָ֑ה מִ֝בְּטֹ֗חַ בָּאָדָֽם׃

Human existence is filled with challenges that naturally drive people to seek out support and protection. However, there is a profound difference between relying on human beings and depending on God, both in the strength of the protection and its absolute certainty. The primary approach among commentators highlights a contrast between two forms of reliance: seeking a temporary, slight shelter, like standing in a shadow, versus having a strong, certain, and constant trust. Ultimately, finding even a minor, temporary refuge in God is far better and more effective than placing complete trust and relying on the strong promises of human beings [רש"י, מאירי].

Another perspective frames this difference as the gap between an internal feeling and a practical reality. Trusting in a human being often remains just an emotion in the heart. A person might feel confident in a friend, but there is no guarantee that this feeling will result in actual shelter. There is always doubt whether the other person will follow through, and even a generous person with the best intentions might simply lack the power to help. In contrast, trusting in God immediately translates into real, practical protection. Because God's power is limitless and He is entirely faithful, relying on Him ensures that the internal feeling of trust instantly becomes an actual refuge [מלבי"ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On a national and historical level, this concept serves as a call to repentance from King David to the Israelites. He guides the nation to avoid relying on the spiritual merits of human beings, including his own merits as their leader. Instead, they must place their trust entirely in God [אלשיך]. To cement this fundamental truth, the subsequent text mirrors this exact idea, reinforcing the reality that there is absolutely no true support in the world other than God [רד"ק].
