Psalms 118:14Sefaria

A deep recognition exists that God is the exclusive source of power, rescue, and praise. When exploring the concepts of strength and song in relation to the Divine, the primary approach among commentators is that these ideas describe God's own traits and actions. The mention of strength refers purely to divine power, without implying that the individual personally possesses this strength. Similarly, the idea of song is directly attached to God. It is His immense power and might that stand by a person to save them In this context, the song represents praise and glory. Salvation occurs specifically to reveal God's strength, inspiring people to sing His praises [מצודת דוד]. Adding to this perspective, the concept of song can also imply something of ultimate excellence and superiority [המאירי].

On the other hand, another approach suggests that these concepts refer to the individual's personal experience. Here, God is the specific strength that the person relies on and trusts, and He becomes the very subject of their personal song and praise A unique interpretation shifts the focus entirely away from music or singing. Instead, the concept of song is linked to the physical act of pruning or cutting. According to this view, God operates in two contrasting ways at the exact same time. On one side, He uses His power to cut down and remove enemies, while on the other side, He extends mercy and salvation to the individual [אלשיך].

When looking at the final outcome of salvation, the action is understood as a past event, confirming that God has already provided the rescue Bringing all these ideas together reveals a clear and powerful truth. Because an individual draws their strength entirely from God and directs all their praise to Him, God is the one who ultimately becomes their salvation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
