תהלים, פרק קי״ח, פסוק ב׳

Psalms 118:2Sefaria

יֹאמַר־נָ֥א יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם חַסְדּֽוֹ׃

A call to gratitude is often broad, but true thankfulness requires recognizing specific acts of kindness. The Israelites are urged to actively speak up and declare that God's kindness is eternal [אבן עזרא], expressing deep gratitude for His everlasting goodness [רש״י]. This invitation is not a distant reflection, but a timely call for the nation to thank God in the present moment, specifically as they experience redemption [מצודת דוד].

The obligation to show gratitude is directly tied to the measure of blessing a person or community receives. Because the Israelites have experienced unique favors from God, their duty to offer thanks is exceptionally high. This principle extends to distinct groups within the nation, such as the priests or the royal house of David. Having been given additional commandments and privileges, they carry their own distinct requirement to give thanks for the specific kindness shown to them [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, addressing the Israelites as a whole connects to King David’s early dedication to the people. Long before he officially took the throne, he faithfully led the nation and fought their battles [מאירי].

A powerful historical example of this enduring kindness is the redemption from the Median exile. During other periods of exile, such as the Babylonian captivity, the nation faced the severe threat of complete destruction. However, during the Median exile, the people's wrongdoings were merely external. Because their failings were only superficial, God responded in a corresponding manner. He allowed them to experience temporary fear and sorrow to awaken their hearts and guide them back to Him, while ensuring they were never in true danger of being destroyed [אלשיך].
