Pressed by their captors to perform, the exiled Israelites face a profound inner conflict. They respond with deep bitterness, recognizing the absolute contradiction between the holiness of their music and the harsh reality of their exile [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. This defiance, however, is not necessarily spoken aloud. Fearing they might be forced to play, the exiles keep these thoughts in their hearts. They even go so far as to hide their musical instruments, telling their captors that they were lost during the long journey [מצודת דוד].

The heart of their refusal lies in the severe clash between the nature of the music and the location where it is demanded. The environment they find themselves in is not merely a country belonging to other nations [אבן עזרא, מאירי]; on a deeper level, it is a land belonging to a foreign god. This reality stands in absolute opposition to a song dedicated to God [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

The divide between the music and the soil is entirely spiritual. The exiles do not completely reject the idea of singing ordinary, secular songs about everyday achievements, as they do experience moments of material success in their dispersion. However, a song of God is entirely different. It is a sacred expression tied directly to Zion, representing His presence, prophecy, the Torah, and the service in the Temple [מלבי״ם]. A divine song of this magnitude simply cannot be performed in an environment of impurity [אלשיך]. It cannot exist far from the Temple [מצודת דוד], upon ground that completely lacks the spiritual readiness and unique qualities required to host such profound holiness [מלבי״ם].
