בְּר֣וֹק בָּ֭רָק וּתְפִיצֵ֑ם שְׁלַ֥ח חִ֝צֶּ֗יךָ וּתְהֻמֵּֽם׃

A dramatic plea is made to God to unleash the forces of nature as weapons of judgment against those who oppose Him. This call unfolds in distinct stages, designed not just to defeat the enemy, but to reveal His divine power. The initial stage is a request for God to send forth lightning [מצודת ציון]. Rather than a standard natural event, this is viewed as a plea for God to create a completely new, unique type of lightning specifically for this strike [מאירי]. Conceptually, this lightning serves as a flashing light from God, intended to show the enemies that the force striking them is a direct divine messenger [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, both the lightning and the subsequent arrows can be understood as metaphors for strict heavenly decrees handed down from above [רד״ק].

The primary goal of the lightning is to scatter the enemies [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This separation is driven by the overwhelming terror that suddenly grips them [מצודת דוד]. The deliberate request is that God should not destroy the enemies instantly. Instead, He should first panic and scatter them, giving them the necessary time to fully recognize His power actively working in the world [אלשיך].

Following the lightning, God is asked to send His arrows. These arrows are understood in various ways: as roaring thunder [מצודת דוד], as different forms of punishment [מאירי], or as sparks of divine fire [אלשיך]. There is a careful hierarchy in this revelation. Even if God chooses not to reveal His great light through the lightning, He is asked to at least send His arrows to defeat the enemies, ensuring that everyone clearly sees that the weapon belongs exclusively to Him [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the purpose of these arrows is to break the enemies and throw them into complete chaos [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The resulting panic will leave them desolate, forcing them to clearly acknowledge that God is the one orchestrating all of these events [אלשיך].
