Psalms 148:8Sefaria

The fierce and seemingly chaotic forces of weather and nature are actually loyal servants, participating in a grand chorus of praise to their Creator. Though these phenomena form in the sky, they originate from the earth as hot, moist vapors rise and mix Alternatively, these forces represent the foundational elements of nature and their natural byproducts: water produces hail and snow, fire generates smoke, and wind gives birth to the storm [מלבי״ם, מאירי].

Nature's extremes are presented as contrasting pairs of heat and cold. Lightning, acting as a burning fire [רד״ק, מאירי], is set against its opposite, frozen hail. Similarly, freezing snow is contrasted with hot vapor rising from the ground, resembling thick smoke Taking a different approach, [אלשיך] connects these pairs to divine miracles and justice. The combination of fire and hail recalls the plague in Egypt, where flames miraculously flared inside falling ice. Meanwhile, snow and smoke symbolize the dual extremes of punishment in the afterlife, which consist of freezing cold and burning fire.

The climax of these phenomena is the fierce storm wind. This violent, churning force is capable of uprooting tall cedars, destroying buildings, and overturning ships at sea However, this destruction is never random. The storm acts as a faithful messenger, carrying out God's decrees and standing ready for His missions, often serving as an instrument of divine justice

According to ancient tradition, these forces of calamity were originally stored in the heavens at the dawn of creation. King David brought them down to earth, reasoning that it is inappropriate for instruments of punishment and ruin to dwell in the immediate residence of God [רש״י].
