יְֽ֭הַלְלוּ אֶת־שֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֑ה כִּ֤י ה֖וּא צִוָּ֣ה וְנִבְרָֽאוּ׃

The heavenly hosts and celestial bodies are called upon to offer praise to God. Unlike earthly beings, whose songs of gratitude often stem from daily needs or divine providence, these upper realms sing simply because they exist and remain under the Creator's authority. The primary approach among commentators is that every created entity owes praise to the One who brought it into being. Even though the celestial bodies are immensely powerful and elevated, they must acknowledge that God is their Master and is infinitely greater than they are [רד״ק]. Because these higher beings do not require anything to survive, their praise is entirely focused on the sheer fact of their existence [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When they offer this praise, they direct it toward the full name of God, as it was through this complete name that the heavenly bodies were formed. This stands in contrast to the Israelites, who sometimes offer praise using a shortened divine name to hint at their unique portion in two distinct realms: the present world and the world to come [אלשיך].

The core reason for this celestial praise is that God willed and decreed their existence [אבן עזרא]. This reality highlights the massive gap between the Creator and His creations. God alone is eternal and precedes all things, whereas the heavens and their vast hosts are entirely new creations brought into being by Him [רד״ק].

The unique nature of the heavenly bodies is further highlighted by how they were formed. The earth underwent a gradual, multi-stage process: an initial creation from nothing, a subsequent formation of matter into new shapes, and a final stage of completion. The heavens, however, experienced only a single act of creation from nothing. They emerged perfectly complete, requiring no further refinement or correction. Furthermore, while the earth is constantly subject to change, decay, and the impacts of free will, the heavens endure forever, operating on fixed and unchanging laws [מלבי״ם].
