Psalms 148:2Sefaria

A general call to the high heavens to praise God transitions into a specific roll call of the celestial entourage The sequence of this cosmic choir is carefully structured, moving in a descending hierarchy from the highest, purely spiritual realms down toward the physical systems of the universe

The highest rank in this heavenly order belongs to the angels. The primary approach among commentators is that these are pure spiritual forms, completely free of any physical body or material substance While they exist as pure spirit, they have distinct functions. Some highlight their practical role as agents sent to carry out God's will, delivering messages and actively intervening in worldly events [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective focuses on their role in worship, placing these beings in the upper heavenly halls where their specific purpose is to sing songs of praise to Him [אלשיך].

Moving down the hierarchy, the call to praise extends to the heavenly hosts, a group understood in two distinct ways. The prevailing view sees this as a reference to the astronomical wonders of the sky. In this understanding, the hosts are pure physical bodies—distinct from coarse earthly matter—making up the celestial spheres, constellations, and countless stars They earn the title of a host due to their massive numbers and diverse forms [רד״ק].

In contrast to this astronomical interpretation, others view the hosts as an additional layer of spiritual entities rather than physical stars. Under this approach, the hosts consist of distinct celestial creatures, such as the fiery Seraphim, Ofanim, and holy beasts [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, they are seen as spiritual armies residing in the upper heavens, a gathering that includes the angel Michael, his heavenly faction, and the souls of the righteous [אלשיך].
