תהלים, פרק קמ״ח, פסוק א׳

Psalms 148:1Sefaria

A cosmic circle of praise encompasses all of reality, beginning in the highest spiritual realms, descending into the physical world, and ultimately rising back upward. The purpose of this universal chorus is to offer thanks to God for the constant renewal and sustenance of reality, as well as for the choosing and future redemption of the Israelites [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, המאירי]. The initial call to praise utilizes a shortened form of God's name, subtly pointing to the unique spiritual standing of the Israelites, who exist simultaneously in both the upper and lower worlds. As the call expands to address the entirety of creation, it transitions to using God's full name [אלשיך].

Directing a call of praise toward the upper realms is not a standard command, as forces of nature and spiritual entities do not possess free will. The primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a poetic expression. It highlights that it is deeply fitting for these realms to honor God, and their constant, unceasing fulfillment of their Creator's will serves as their ultimate form of praise [רד״ק, המאירי].

The origins of this celestial praise are described with dual expressions of high places, prompting different understandings of the spiritual structure. Some view this as a poetic repetition meant to emphasize that the sound of praise will echo clearly from the uppermost skies [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Others understand it as a precise, graded mapping of the highest spiritual worlds, realms completely free of physical matter. From these pure heights, a chain of praise begins its descent toward the angels and the physical universe below [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Following mystical traditions, these locations point to the most profound and hidden spiritual universes, representing the worlds of emanation and creation [חומת אנך].

From another perspective, these highest realms are understood to contain two specific firmaments made up of entirely opposing forces. One holds the forces of kindness, containing the hidden treasures of life, peace, and blessing. The second contains the forces of strict justice and raw power, such as violent storms, snow, and hail. Calling upon these specific heights reveals that praise ascends to God equally from both the recipients of His goodness and the forces of harsh judgment. Together, these contrasting elements complete the perfect harmony of creation [אלשיך].
