The heavens testify to the glory of God in complete silence, presenting a paradox of cosmic evidence that is perfectly clear yet lacks any physical sound. The primary approach among commentators is that the heavens do not possess a physical mouth like human beings, meaning they produce no explicit statements, actual speech, or audible voice [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Human communication relies on three physical elements: the movement of the voice to form complete logical sentences, the combination of these movements into individual words, and the actual sound emerging from the throat [מלבי״ם, אבן עזרא]. The heavens, however, transmit their profound message without using any of these physical mechanisms [חומת אנך].

This raises a question about how the heavens can express anything at all. One explanation is that the absence of sound only applies to human hearing; the message itself exists in reality, even if flesh and blood cannot physically hear it [אלשיך]. Rather than being absorbed through the ears, this heavenly message is taken in through the eyes. Through the observation of nature, the inner vision of the soul and the human mind grasp the truth of creation [אבן עזרא, מאירי]. A deeper philosophical perspective views the celestial bodies as living, intelligent entities that praise God constantly. Their praise is not expressed with a physical mouth or tongue, but through pure intellectual thought, which serves as the highest and truest form of praise [מאירי].

In stark contrast to the idea of a silent universe, an entirely different approach understands this cosmic testimony as a sound of immense power. According to this view, the message operates as a double negative, meaning there is no statement or word in creation where a voice is not heard. Every natural phenomenon and every movement in the world loudly declares the greatness and wisdom of the Creator, with the voice of nature's wonders echoing endlessly from one end of the earth to the other [מלבי״ם].
