תהלים, פרק כ״ז, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 27:12Sefaria

King David offers a desperate prayer for divine protection, seeking shelter not only from physical danger but also from the destructive power of lies and malicious desires. He asks God not to leave him at the mercy of those who hate him, people who use false testimony and verbal abuse to bring him down.

The primary approach among commentators is that David is pleading not to be handed over to the raw desires and ambitions of his foes, praying that their craving to harm him will never become a reality. [רד״ק] adds a deeper layer to what these enemies actually want. He explains that their ultimate goal is to rob David of the peace and free time he needs to serve God. By keeping him constantly tied up in wars and physical struggles, they hope to distract him from his spiritual life. [אבן עזרא] notes that this desire is fueled by deep disgust and contempt for the king. Offering a very different perspective, [אלשיך] suggests David is asking God that he should not be used as a sacrifice or a form of atonement to pay for the sins of his enemies.

The attacks against David take the form of people stepping forward to spread baseless lies. [רד״ק] and [המאירי] explain that these individuals spread rumors painting David as a wicked, violent man covered in sin, claiming he has no connection to God. [אלשיך] points out that these false accusations were highly specific, focusing on claims that David took a married woman. These accusers completely ignored the known practice that soldiers in David's army would write divorce documents for their wives before leaving for battle. Beyond the historical conflict, [מלבי״ם] offers a psychological and spiritual view. He suggests the false witnesses are not just people on the outside, but represent the internal doubts and thoughts of disbelief that pop up when a person sees a good individual suffering. These doubts act as false witnesses against God's guiding hand in the world, and only a deep belief in the afterlife can silence them.

The methods of these enemies rely heavily on the spoken word. The simple act of breathing out air is weaponized to utter cruelty and violence against David. However, [רש״י] points out that their speech also functions as a snare. This reveals the true nature of the enemies' words: they are not just meant to insult or cause pain, but are carefully set traps designed to trip a person and cause their complete downfall.
