After expressing deep spiritual longing, the focus shifts to a direct and practical plea. David asks God to remove any obstacles and disturbances that interfere with his spiritual service. This moment marks the actual beginning of the practical request for which he turned to God [רד״ק, אלשיך]. Crucially, this plea does not stem from a desire for material comfort. Instead, it is designed entirely to allow him to achieve his ultimate goal of clinging closely to God [מלבי״ם].

In his prayer, David directs his words specifically toward the honored name of God [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that he is asking God to hear his voice at the exact moment he calls out. However, another perspective connects this plea to the divine promise that God answers the truly righteous even before they speak. Seeking this grace, David asks for such a swift response, yet he adds a request that even if God grants his wish beforehand, He should still listen to the actual prayer that follows. Alternatively, out of deep humility, David does not view himself as worthy of being answered before he speaks. Therefore, he simply asks that God listen when he actively calls out, and only then show him grace and provide an answer [אלשיך].

This plea for rescue and grace extends far beyond David himself. It serves as a prayer for all the Israelites who are battling enemies and enduring distress, as they are his people and fall under his responsibility [אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, this request for physical salvation from enemies acts as a necessary foundation. It paves the way for his deepest, most profound inner desire: to achieve absolute closeness to God and to ensure that God never hides His face from him [מלבי״ם].
