Psalms 28:8Sefaria

A profound bond exists between God, the people of Israel, and their king, bound together by Divine providence that provides strength and protection. At the center of this dynamic is King David, the anointed leader, who recognizes that his own security and the power of his nation are entirely dependent on God The Divine strength granted from above is not meant for an isolated individual, but rather flows to the collective body of God's servants [אבן עזרא].

The primary approach among commentators is that this Divine strength is given to the people of Israel, specifically those who trust in God and walk a pure path Others suggest a more battlefield-focused meaning, where the strength is granted specifically to the mighty warriors and loyal soldiers fighting on David's behalf In the heat of battle, God acts as the source of power for these fighters, while simultaneously serving as an impenetrable fortress for the king who relies on their help [אבן עזרא].

This dynamic reveals a deep mutual dependence between the leader and his nation. David's own salvation is inseparably tied to the fate of Israel. In fact, God acts as a fortress for the king precisely because of the merit of the people he governs [מלבי״ם]. When the nation witnesses Divine justice, they are inspired to serve God with renewed dedication. It is ultimately this spiritual wholeness of the people that brings peace, stability, and power to the king who shepherds them [אלשיך]. From another perspective, there is a direct parallel between the king's past experiences and his hopes for the nation. David prays for the Israelites as they go out to war, asking God to grant them the courage to remain steadfast even in his absence, just as God had previously been a fortress of salvation for him during his own battles [רד״ק].

On a deeper level, the endurance of the nation stems directly from their connection to God. His great name is the true source of Israel’s power, and just as He exists forever, so too will His people [חומת אנך]. Furthermore, the concepts of Divine strength and protection represent the Written Torah and the Oral Torah. It is the enduring merit of these teachings that ultimately brings about the salvation of the anointed king [חומת אנך].
