Psalms 31:16Sefaria

בְּיָדְךָ֥ עִתֹּתָ֑י הַצִּ֘ילֵ֤נִי מִיַּד־א֝וֹיְבַ֗י וּמֵֽרֹדְפָֽי׃

A person facing severe distress often reaches a profound realization about human existence. The trajectory of a life and its ultimate destiny are not dictated by the laws of nature or the whims of other people, but rest entirely under the watchful care of God.

The primary approach among commentators is that all the passing events of a person's life, whether moments of joy or periods of hardship, are decreed and guided solely by God [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This understanding offers immense comfort during times of prolonged suffering. A person can avoid despair because they know that every passing second is held by God, who can change their circumstances at any moment [מאירי]. Trusting that salvation depends exclusively on Him stands in sharp contrast to the mindset of those who place their faith in empty, false promises [אבן עזרא].

Looking at the situation through the lens of immediate danger, another perspective suggests that even the exact moments when attackers plot to ambush and strike are controlled by God, rather than the attackers themselves [רד״ק]. On a deeper level, the very boundaries of human life are defined by divine will. The exact moments of a person's birth and death bypass the natural order entirely and are held directly by God. Because of this, if attackers were to successfully kill the person they are hunting, they would not merely be causing harm through natural means; they would essentially be snatching a soul straight from God's hands [אלשיך].

Grounded in this absolute certainty that God controls every outcome, a desperate plea arises for rescue from those who seek to cause harm. Historically, this plea is rooted in specific events. The hostile forces are identified as the people of Ziph, while the relentless pursuers refer to King Saul and his men, who hunted David to take his life [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].
