Psalms 31:21Sefaria

Divine protection often operates in mysterious ways, offering a shield that guards both the physical body and the inner spirit. Those who place their trust in God find themselves sheltered by His grace. When God turns His face toward a person, it is a profound expression of love and favor, wrapping them in a protective shadow [רד״ק, מאירי]. However, this protection can sometimes take the form of concealment. There are moments when it appears that God has hidden His presence, leaving the righteous exposed to suffering and persecution. Yet, this very concealment is a precise form of divine care working to their ultimate benefit, quietly saving them from their enemies [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this hiddenness is directed entirely at the wicked; God conceals His face and His anger from them specifically to ensure the rescue of those who revere Him [אבן עזרא].

The danger from which the righteous require saving takes several forms. The primary approach among commentators is that God provides a shield against the arrogance, pride, and haughtiness of wicked individuals [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Others view the threat as bands of corrupt people who join forces to plot harm [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On a deeper, spiritual level, the danger lies within. The obstacles a person faces represent the evil inclination and the worldly desires of the human heart, which act as rough terrain ruining a straight path in life. Through suffering and the apparent concealment of God's face, these inner crooked traits are straightened out. By doing so, God protects the human soul from sin, a form of guarding that is far more vital than merely protecting the physical body [מלבי״ם].

Beyond physical and spiritual threats, God provides a safe haven of mercy to guard against the destructive power of gossip, disputes, and slander [מאירי, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רד״ק]. This specific protection from malicious words echoes the historical struggles of King David, who desperately needed rescue from informers who betrayed his hiding places to King Saul. The shelter God provides against such slander is often something light, fragile, and temporary. A striking example is the miraculous spider web spun across the entrance of the cave where King David once hid. This delicate barrier demonstrates that God can rescue His chosen ones from the vicious words of informers using the most flimsy of covers. It proves that true safety does not depend on sturdy walls, but relies completely on placing one's absolute trust in God [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].
