Psalms 31:10Sefaria

Deep personal crisis often transforms a private prayer into a desperate cry, where intense emotional pain begins to break down the physical body. After previously expressing trust and joy over past kindnesses, the singer now faces a new, suffocating trouble that forces him to beg for renewed mercy [אבן עזרא]. He asks for this grace as a completely free gift from God, hoping that His salvation will not be deducted from his own spiritual merits [אלשיך]. The crisis he faces is twofold: he suffers from the actual, physical threats of his enemies, while simultaneously enduring deep emotional wounds from the shameful and angry words they hurl at him [מלבי״ם].

This overwhelming sorrow takes a severe toll on his physical state. The primary approach among commentators compares his bodily deterioration to a moth eating away at clothing; his physical strength rots and wastes away under the weight of his troubles. Another perspective likens his condition to dull, frosted glass. In this view, his vitality and perception are severely dimmed, leaving him weakened and unable to see reality clearly, much like a person trying to look through a clouded window [רש״י, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The physical breakdown first appears in his eyes. His vision blurs and weakens, a result of relentless crying [רד״ק], the sheer grief and frustration caused by his enemies [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], or the intense physical heat generated by a deeply sorrowful heart [אבן עזרא]. The damage then spreads inward, attacking his very drive to live and his digestive system. His appetite vanishes, and his inner organs ache and weaken, a direct result of the hunger and thirst he endured while fleeing from his pursuers [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. Beyond the physical body, this inner exhaustion also clouds his intellect, dimming his natural wisdom under the heavy burden of constant worry [מאירי].

Beneath the physical and emotional collapse lies a profound spiritual regret. The deepest source of the singer's sadness is not merely the bodily pain or the wasting away of his health. Rather, he is heartbroken by how his energy is being spent. He mourns the fact that his physical strength and vitality are being consumed by anger and temporary worldly troubles, instead of being exhausted through meaningful effort and hard work in the service of God [אלשיך].
