תהלים, פרק ל״א, פסוק כ״ה

Psalms 31:25Sefaria

חִ֭זְקוּ וְיַאֲמֵ֣ץ לְבַבְכֶ֑ם כׇּל־הַ֝מְיַחֲלִ֗ים לַֽיהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

The conclusion of the psalm serves as both practical advice and a conceptual summary of its core message [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. Drawing directly from personal experience, the psalmist turns to the audience with a powerful lesson. Just as he placed his hope in God and experienced salvation, others can be entirely confident that their own hopes will never be disappointed or return empty [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This encouragement is directed toward anyone who places their hope in God. However, there is a subtle distinction regarding the spiritual levels of the audience. While earlier thoughts were directed at the pious, commanding them to love God due to their high spiritual standing, this specific message is meant for those on the level of simply hoping, urging them to find strength [אבן עזרא]. Additionally, this call can be understood as a direct source of comfort for the Israelites enduring the hardships of exile [מאירי].

A fascinating dynamic between human effort and Divine assistance unfolds in the pursuit of this strength. The primary approach among commentators is that the initial step must come from the individual. A person must first make the active choice to strengthen themselves. Once that human effort is made, God responds by providing the courage to sustain that strength [רד״ק, מאירי, אלשיך]. This Divine assistance ensures that the inner resolve persists and endures over time [מלבי״ם].

This internal courage also addresses the dual nature of human inclinations. When a person makes a small initial effort to be strong, God helps them overcome their personal fears and inner struggles. This strength is especially necessary when observing the wicked living in peace. Instead of falling into despair, a person should draw logical encouragement from such sights. If God is willing to reward those who actively oppose His will for the minor good deeds they perform, He will certainly reward, strengthen, and support those who dedicate themselves to hoping in Him [אלשיך].
