תהלים, פרק ל״א, פסוק י״ח

Psalms 31:18Sefaria

A heartfelt prayer often draws a sharp line between the person seeking shelter and those trying to cause harm, asking for divine justice to step into reality. The primary approach among commentators is that this plea expresses a deep hope to avoid disappointment and not walk away empty-handed after turning to God. This request is rooted in the very act of reaching out and trusting Him. Because the individual has placed complete confidence in God, it is only fitting that the prayer is answered, sparing the person from the sadness and embarrassment of an unanswered call.

In sharp contrast, there is a request for the wicked to experience shame. This shame is understood as the total collapse of their plans and hopes to harm the innocent. Their schemes will fail entirely because they never looked to God or considered His presence [רד״ק, מאירי]. A different perspective suggests that this shame is actually meant to happen in the present world as a tool for change. When those who do wrong witness God's protection over the person they are attacking, their shock and sense of failure are meant to wake them up. The ultimate goal is for them to repent, as God prefers that people turn away from their bad choices rather than face death [אלשיך].

When looking at the ultimate downfall of the wicked and their descent to the grave, commentators offer different perspectives on their fate. One approach focuses on silence. Those who were once loud, aggressive, and relentless in their pursuit will finally be quieted and struck mute by their downfall into the grave [רש״י, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective views this descent as complete destruction, where they are simply cut off from life and sent into ruin [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Continuing the earlier theme of personal change, a third approach understands this process not as physical death, but as an act of imagination. The wicked will picture the severe punishment and dark fate waiting for them in the grave, and the sheer terror of this realization will drive them to repent and abandon their harmful paths [אלשיך].
