תהלים, פרק ל״ב, פסוק י״א

Psalms 32:11Sefaria

שִׂמְח֬וּ בַיהֹוָ֣ה וְ֭גִילוּ צַדִּיקִ֑ים וְ֝הַרְנִ֗ינוּ כׇּל־יִשְׁרֵי־לֵֽב׃ {פ}

True spiritual joy is not merely an emotion, but a profound reflection of trust and connection with the Divine. A powerful call to happiness reveals the deep sources of a believer's joy and highlights the subtle differences between various levels of spiritual devotion.

This joy stems directly from a deep trust in God and the abundant kindness He provides [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. For some, this happiness is found in the pure satisfaction of serving God [רד״ק]. Others view it as a celebration of God's protection, keeping the innocent safe from illness and granting them healing [אבן עזרא]. The use of God's explicit name in this context serves as a reminder of His faithfulness, assuring a good reward for those who fulfill His will [אלשיך].

While there is a general sense of gladness, there is also a specific call to celebrate fresh salvations and new, positive developments [מלבי״ם]. Yet, this joy is not always fully realized in the present. The complete happiness of the righteous is destined for the future, mirroring God, whose own joy in the world will only be perfect in times to come. Because of this, good people might experience suffering in this world, accepting it with peace [אלשיך].

A distinction emerges between two spiritual paths. A righteous person is one who actively struggles against their negative impulses and conquers them. In contrast, an upright person stands at a higher spiritual level. Their heart naturally leans toward goodness, entirely filled with inner integrity without the need for constant inner battle [מלבי״ם].

The culmination of this spiritual state is an outward expression of song [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that this is an active call to inspire others to sing. One perspective suggests that the righteous are tasked with sharing good news and declaring God's kindness, thereby bringing joy to the upright who wish to follow their example [רד״ק, מאירי]. Another viewpoint reverses this dynamic, placing the responsibility on the upright. Because the upright possess hearts completely free of doubt, they are called to strengthen the righteous. Occasionally, a righteous person might feel saddened or conflicted when witnessing good people suffer. In these moments, it is the duty of the upright to assure them of God's ultimate goodness and awaken their song [אלשיך].
