תהלים, פרק נ״ג, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 53:5Sefaria

The destructive actions of wicked individuals often stem from a profound ignorance of spiritual reality and a complete disregard for God's presence. Those who commit evil harm the nation with terrifying ease, destroying lives as casually and naturally as a person eats a daily meal [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While carrying out these cruel acts, they completely ignore the Creator and refuse to acknowledge Him. However, these evildoers must internalize that this reckless behavior will ultimately culminate in overwhelming dread at the end of days [רש״י].

This rebuke also serves as a direct challenge to those who deny God's existence. These heretics might think their unchecked power justifies their beliefs, but they fail to realize the truth. Their ability to harm the nation so freely is only possible because the people of Israel themselves had drifted away from God and stopped calling out to Him in prayer [מצודת דוד].

Another perspective traces this dynamic back to the era of King David, emphasizing a failure of gratitude on the part of the nation. In this view, the fault lay with the people who consumed their food without offering a blessing to God. The wicked nations attacking them should take this as a stark warning: if God's own people were struck with anxiety over a seemingly small failure to express gratitude for a meal, the cruel nations should certainly be terrified of the severe punishment awaiting them [מלבי״ם].

Looking through a historical lens, this theme aligns closely with the events of the Book of Esther. The evildoers seeking to consume the nation are understood to be King Ahasuerus and Haman, while the shared meal points to the private banquet Queen Esther hosted for them. Esther orchestrated this feast with a specific psychological goal. She wanted to strip away the false sense of security among the sinners in Israel, ensuring they would not simply rely on having a sympathetic queen in the royal palace. By showing Haman's close relationship with the king, she aimed to provoke a deep sense of panic. Had the people remained unaware of this banquet, they would have stayed apathetic and never called out to God. It was the shocking news of that shared meal that shattered their complacency, driving them to cry out to Him and ultimately secure their salvation [אלשיך].
