Psalms 86:6Sefaria

הַאֲזִ֣ינָה יְ֭הֹוָה תְּפִלָּתִ֑י וְ֝הַקְשִׁ֗יבָה בְּק֣וֹל תַּחֲנוּנוֹתָֽי׃

Reaching out to the Creator involves a profound duality of pouring out one's soul while simultaneously asking for basic needs. The act of standing before God is layered, blending a high spiritual connection with an overflow of urgent, personal requests. A person asks God to tilt His ear and truly listen, a request that is essentially a plea for divine kindness [אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון]. The sheer volume of these requests is vast; a person does not just offer a single cry, but rather lays a massive, overflowing amount of pleas before God [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי, רד״ק].

The primary approach among commentators highlights a core difference between a formal prayer and a practical plea. Prayer represents the ultimate pouring out of the soul. It is a moment of spiritual elevation where a person connects deeply with the Divine source, completely detaching from the physical world. Pleas, on the other hand, are grounded in reality, focusing purely on a person's physical and material needs. Because the spiritual connection of prayer is greater and more essential, it demands a much deeper level of divine listening. The physical requests are secondary. The underlying hope is that as God listens deeply to the elevated, spiritual prayer, He will naturally pay attention to the accompanying pleas and fulfill the person's physical needs [מלבי״ם].

An alternative perspective shifts the focus to the daily, routine prayers of the community. In this view, prayer represents the standard, fixed worship of every Israelite, offered even when there is no immediate, personal crisis. A person asks God to listen personally and calmly to these ongoing pleas, carrying a deep trust that such general, communal prayers are always heard by Him, even if the divine response appears to be delayed [אלשיך].
