תהלים, פרק פ״ו, פסוק י״ד

Psalms 86:14Sefaria

A desperate cry for help in this world reveals a man completely surrounded by powerful, malicious enemies. The prayer creates a sharp contrast between the victim and his attackers. While the praying individual is previously described as devoted, poor, and vulnerable, his enemies are ruthless and wicked [אבן עזרא]. The plea itself is an emphasized, deliberate cry directed straight to God [מנחת שי]. These enemies do not attack out of necessity or because they have a just claim. Instead, they are driven by pure malice, cruelty, and a stubborn desire to cause harm [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ].

Historically, this situation points to specific individuals like Doeg and Ahithophel who rose up against David [רש״י]. On a spiritual level, this conflict can be seen differently. Intentional sins committed by a person can turn into spiritual accusers, which then awaken physical enemies in the real world to strike against him [אלשיך].

The attackers form a unified group of fierce and strong individuals [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. Their goal is to take the victim's life, whether through actual physical murder or by preventing him from reaching his spiritual destiny and thereby destroying his soul [מאירי]. This creates a deep sense of helplessness. The victim cannot rely on his own innocence to appeal to their conscience because they are driven by wickedness, and he cannot defeat them in battle because they are simply too strong and ruthless [מלבי״ם].

His last remaining hope is that his attackers might back down out of a basic fear of heaven. However, the primary approach among commentators is that these individuals have absolutely no regard for God's will and do not fear His punishment. In the context of David, his enemies purposely ignored the fact that God commanded Samuel to anoint him as king [רש״י]. Even if the attack serves as a divine punishment for the victim's own sins, the enemies themselves are not acting as faithful agents of God. They are motivated entirely by natural hatred and personal jealousy, rather than any true devotion to Him [אלשיך].
